Built in 1908 and closed in 1987, Pennhurst State School and Hospital was originally known as the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic.
After severe mistreatment of the residents was demonstrated by reporter Bill Baldini in the 1968 documentary “Suffer the Little Children”, the lawsuits began to roll in and finally in 1987, the government ordered the hospital to be shut down.
